Maseru, Feb. 06 — United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that he will not be attending the upcoming G20 summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, citing concerns over the country’s actions, including the expropriation of private property.
This comes a few days after US President Donald Trump threatened to cut off funding to South Africa.
South Africa will host a meeting of foreign ministers of the G20 group of countries from February 20-21 in Johannesburg. It assumed the G20 presidency from December 2024 and the tenure will end in November 2025.
He further criticized South Africa’s use of the G20 platform to promote solidarity, equality, and sustainability” to promote “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and climate change.
