MASERU — The Kingdom of Lesotho, represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Mr. Lejone Mpotjoane, participated in an Extraordinary Southern African Development Community (SADC) virtual summit held on Tuesday.
In his opening remarks, SADC Chairperson and President of the Republic of South Africa, Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa said that the purpose of the meeting was for Heads of State and Government to consider a report on the prevailing political and security situation in Madagascar.
President Ramaphosa noted that, as part of its mandate, SADC is tasked with ensuring that peace, stability and constitutional order are restored in the island nation.
He further indicated that a SADC technical mission has been deployed to Madagascar to conduct a fact-finding exercise and assess the situation on the ground. The mission is expected to engage with key stakeholders and provide recommendations that will guide the regional bloc’s response.
President Ramaphosa emphasised the importance of dialogue and cooperation among all parties in Madagascar, adding that SADC remains committed to supporting efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace and stability in the country.
Madagascar is facing a political and security crisis following youth-led protests over worsening living conditions, including power and water shortages, unemployment and poverty. The unrest escalated into violent clashes with security forces, resulting in deaths and injuries.
Regional bodies, including SADC, have expressed concern and are urging dialogue, restraint and a peaceful resolution, while closely monitoring the situation due to its implications for regional stability and democracy.
