LESOTHO’S 2025 VOLUNTARY REVIEW HIGHLIGHTS PROGRESS, CHALLENGES IN HEALTH, SDG’s DEVELOPMENT

Maseru, Oct. 08 — Lesotho has reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to sustainable development through the release of its 2025 Voluntary National Review (VNR), aligning national priorities with the global 2030 Agenda and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

The report builds on the foundations of the 2019 and 2022 reviews, offering a comprehensive assessment of progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The VNR reflects Lesotho’s inclusive and participatory approach, engaging government institutions, civil society, the private sector, and development partners. Special emphasis was placed on representing marginalized groups, including women, youth, and persons with disabilities, ensuring the principle of “Leave No One Behind” remains central to national development.

Lesotho’s performance on SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) reveals both encouraging gains and persistent challenges, maternal mortality has dropped by 54% since 2009, with 89% of births attended by skilled personnel.

Under-five and neonatal mortality rates have declined, supported by improved antenatal care and facility-based deliveries. HIV incidence has halved since 2017, though prevalence remains high, tuberculosis incidence has stagnated.

Family planning coverage has improved, but adolescent birth rates and unmet needs among youth remain high. Emergency preparedness and availability of essential medicines have strengthened. . .
