POLICE URGE GUARDIANS TO SECURE PASSPORTS FOR CHILDREN

Qacha’s Nek, Jan. 14 — As schools reopen, the Qacha’s Nek Anti-Human Trafficking and Migrants Control Focal Person, Detective Sergeant (D/Sgt) ’Mamatheko Bohloa, has urged parents and caregivers to apply for passports for their children to prevent illegal border crossings during school holidays.

In an interview with the Agency, D/Sgt. Bohloa, who also serves on the District Child Protection Team (DCPT), said early preparation would ensure that children are able to visit parents working in South Africa legally and safely.

“The best time to apply for passports is now, while children are busy with school,” she said.

She noted that regular school attendance plays a critical role in protecting children from risky behaviours such as drug abuse and the temptation to cross illegally into South Africa in search of work.

“When children are not in school, they are more exposed to drug abuse and are easily influenced to cross the border or engage in child labour,” she said.

D/Sgt. Bohloa also appealed to parents and caregivers to stop depriving children of education in favour of livestock herding, which remains a major challenge in Qacha’s Nek.

“As we speak, I am following up on a case in a local village where children are reportedly being kept out of school to herd livestock,” she said.

She added that authorities are working tirelessly to ensure that no child stays at home, especially now that the Department of Social Development has opened applications for education sponsorships…
