WOMAN SENTENCED FOR ABANDONING NEWBORN BABY

Maseru, Nov. 12 — Magistrate Nkhethoa Molapo has suspended the sentence of Regina Majara (24) of Lithabaneng in the district of Maseru, who was convicted of negligence and exposing a child to physical injury after abandoning her newborn baby on the roadside.

The court heard that on November 8, 2025, Majara unlawfully and intentionally left her newborn baby naked on the roadside. She pleaded guilty to the charges.

During the proceedings, witness Matseliso Tsolo of Lithabaneng testified that on the same day, she met Majara while returning from the shop.

The accused reportedly asked her where the village chief lived and told her that she had seen a baby near a neighbor’s house. The two women went to check and later took the baby to the chief’s place.
